Mental Health Week 2025

CMHA Mental Health Week

Unmasking Mental Health, Reducing Stigma, and Strengthening Our Communities

May 5–11 is Canadian Mental Health Week. Led annually by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), it is an essential movement for all of us – individuals, families, workplaces, and communities – to reflect, learn, and talk openly about mental health.

Unmasking Mental Health

This year’s theme invites us to look beyond surface appearances and truly see each other. Many people who experience mental health or substance use challenges often feel compelled to hide their struggles behind a mask of normalcy due to stigma and judgment. The heavier the stigma, the heavier the mask – and the harder it becomes for individuals to seek support.

Why Reducing Stigma Matters

Stigma thrives in silence. It isolates people, deepens suffering, and creates barriers to receiving support. At Canadian Addiction Treatment Centres, we witness firsthand the impact stigma has on individuals who face addiction and mental health challenges. We understand that stigma can prevent someone from reaching out, getting help, or fully embracing their journey toward recovery.

Reducing stigma is not just compassionate – it’s lifesaving. When we collectively commit to openness, empathy, and understanding, we create safer spaces for healing and growth.

How You Can Help

Mental Health Week is a meaningful opportunity for all of us to engage in positive action. Here are some ways you can help unmask mental health and reduce stigma in your community:

Start the Conversation:

Talk openly and honestly about mental health in your home, workplace, or social circles. Sharing your experiences or just showing your willingness to listen can dramatically change someone’s life.

Join Local Activities:

Participate in community events and initiatives that support mental health awareness. Whether it’s workshops, webinars, or local gatherings, your involvement demonstrates solidarity and helps normalize conversations around mental health.

Educate Yourself and Others:

Explore resources provided by organizations like the CMHA. Share these insights with your networks to foster awareness and understanding.

Offer Support Without Judgment:

Be mindful of your reactions to those around you. A supportive approach – simply listening and acknowledging experiences without judgment – can significantly impact someone’s mental health journey.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

Mental Health Week is not only about raising awareness; it’s about building connections, creating supportive communities, and changing lives for the better. Let’s remove our masks, dismantle stigma, and build an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen, understood, and supported.

Join us this Mental Health Week – because together, we’re stronger.
