Breaking the Cycle: Observing the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
Each year on June 26, the world marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a day of awareness, reflection, and action around the global efforts to combat substance use and illicit drug trade.
At Canadian Addiction Treatment Centres (CATC), this day serves as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do: to support individuals living with addiction and to contribute to a healthier, more compassionate society.
Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime
This year’s United Nations campaign, “Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime,” shines a light on the urgent need to address complex systems that drive drug trafficking and organized crime. Breaking this cycle requires more than enforcement; it calls for prevention and long-term investment in the root causes of substance use, such as:
- Poverty
- Inequality
- Trauma
- Lack of access to education, healthcare, and social supports
These are the very barriers that CATC works to address every day.
Working toward change – together
Meaningful change takes a whole-system effort. That means partnering with community organizations, policymakers, and healthcare providers to build the support people need long before they reach a crisis point.
The impact of drug misuse and trafficking is profound, but so is the power of recovery. Every person who finds stability, reconnects with their family, returns to school or work, or simply finds a sense of peace represents a break in the cycle.
