Recognizing PTSD Awareness Day
Recognizing PTSD Awareness Day
On PTSD Awareness Day, observed annually on June 27th, we join the global community in raising awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. With the purpose of breaking the stigma surrounding PTSD, fostering understanding, and showing compassion for those impacted by trauma, we at CATC are particularly close to its intersection with substance use and addiction.
Mental Health and Substance Use
PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by traumatic experiences. While 8.5% of Canadian adults have indicated moderate to severe symptoms, it is more common in public safety personnel and members of the armed forces due to their increased exposure to potentially traumatic events.
PTSD frequently coexists with substance use and addiction, as individuals may turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with intense emotional distress. Unfortunately, however, substance use can exacerbate symptoms over time, creating a cycle that is difficult to overcome.
At CATC, we recognize the complexities that individuals facing PTSD and addiction experience. Effective treatment requires an integrated approach that addresses both trauma and substance use simultaneously. Through compassionate care, counselling, and personalized treatment plans, we offer the support needed to overcome these challenges within our network.
Medavie Blue Cross Provider Status
We are proud to share that our 1000 Islands Addiction Treatment Centre was recently appointed provider status with Medavie Blue Cross. This designation allows us to extend our mental health and addiction treatment services to active members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
We look forward to welcoming active military personnel into our CARF-accredited recovery program, offering compassionate and trauma-informed care that can address complex co-occurring disorders including PTSD, anxiety and depression.
