#MyRecovery – Jeff’s story

Happy Recovery Month

During Recovery Month, we’ve asked people in recovery to share their stories about what led them to recovery and their experience with treatment, so that others can feel empowered to open up and seek help, too. This is Jeff’s story. #MyRecovery

1. How did your experience with opioids start, and when did you know you needed help?

It all began when my family opened a second business with over 60 employees. The stress of managing the business, paying bills, and feeling the pressure of being relied on took a toll on me. I started using cocaine socially to stay alert and handle the workload. The stress and pressure led to a decline in my mental health, and I found it difficult to cope. With the business struggling, I felt embarrassed in front of the community and had to fake a smile every day. Eventually, I turned to Oxy to numb the mental and physical pain I was experiencing. I needed an escape that’s when I turned to Oxy to mask the pain mentally and the physical pain I felt.

2. What’s something that a lot of people misunderstand or “get wrong” about addiction or people who use drugs?

Cravings are difficult and unbearable to go through. Withdrawals are impossible to ignore. To feel “normal,” you need to be high. When you’re sober, the withdrawal makes it impossible to function. You need to use to function.

3. What has it been like getting treatment? What has it meant to you?

This program has helped my marriage and has changed my life. If it wasn’t for the program, I don’t know how I would have managed withdrawals and got my life back together.

4. What have you learned about yourself along your recovery journey?

I am not as strong as I thought because we all need help in the end.

5. What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?

Truly, I want everyone to win. I am at my happiest during Christmas when all the people I love are around me, opening their gifts and being happy. Even if I receive nothing, seeing others happy makes me happy.

6. If you could share one message to people who may be struggling with substance use, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I never thought I would find a clinic with professionals where I can be myself and share openly, knowing my confidentiality is protected. Trust is hard for me, and this program has given me peace of mind. I am grateful for the amazing team at North York OATC.

Thank you, Jeff, for sharing your recovery journey. Happy Recovery Month!
