#MyRecovery – Tim’s Story

Happy Recovery Month

During Recovery Month, we’ve asked people in recovery to share their stories about what led them to recovery and their experience with treatment, so that others can feel empowered to open up and seek help, too. This is Tim’s story. #MyRecovery

Tim #MyRecovery1. How did your experience with opioids start, and when did you know you needed help?

I started at age 16. My friend has Morphine tabs and offered it to me, it was instant euphoria, I instantly fell in love with it.

I knew I needed help when I woke up in a daze and realized that my girlfriend had turned me into an IV user.

2. What’s something that a lot of people misunderstand or “get wrong” about addiction or people who use drugs?

People think if you have an addiction issue, you’re evil or unclean. The truth is we’re people, people that started using to cover up pain they’ve experienced in their lives.

3. What has it been like getting treatment? What has it meant to you?

The need and the want to get treatment were always there, the fear of stopping was overwhelming. But treatment has meant everything to me. It meant getting my life back.

4. What have you learned about yourself along your recovery journey?

I’ve learned that I am able to do anything I put my mind to.

5. What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?

That I am an honest, giving, loving, human being. I’m not just the stigma that people have of me.

6. If you could share one message to people who may be struggling with substance use, what would it be?

That despite whatever you think you can or can’t do…  You can do it!! You’ve been through so much with your addiction, it shows you are an able human being.

Thank you, Tim, for sharing your recovery journey. Happy Recovery Month!
