#MyRecovery – Abigail’s Story

Happy Recovery Month

During Recovery Month, we’ve asked people in recovery to share their stories about what led them to recovery and their experience with treatment, so that others can feel empowered to open up and seek help, too. This is Abigail’s story. #MyRecovery

I was 16 years old when I had my first taste of morphine. I was very depressed at the time and hung out with the wrong people. I started using morphine more and more as it made me feel numb and feel like I could do anything.

I used drugs for many many years. Morphine was my drug of choice. I tried years later to get clean by use of methadone prescribed by a doctor but that didn’t work. Still got high on morphine.

One day I met someone and eventually started dating. Still using I tried going to OATC and got put on Suboxone by a doctor. Still used while put on that even though I met someone that kept believing in me and eventually I got a part time job. I was happy. I was making money, but I still used.

Two years into dating I finally stopped using and realized that keeping busy with work and with the help of Suboxone I finally stopped using. Also having someone that loves you and believes in you in your darkest hours helps so much.

I’m still on Suboxone 7 years later but that’s ok with me cause I’m not using and I’m halfway to getting off Suboxone.

So as long as you keep trying and hopefully have someone that loves you and believes in you no matter what your going through you can DO IT!

Thank you, Abigail, for sharing your experience in recovery. Happy Recovery Month!
