#MyRecovery – Anna’s Story
#MyRecovery – Anna’s Story
During Recovery Month, we’ve asked people in recovery to share their stories about what led them to recovery and their experience with treatment, so that others can feel empowered to open up and seek help, too. This is Anna’s story. #MyRecovery
1. How did your experience with opioids start, and when did you know you needed help?
I had been a meth addict for 5 years when my boyfriend at the time overdosed. After that I got into heroin. I quit for 2 years on methadone but once I got down to 4 mg I relapsed onto fentanyl. I went to treatment and did the 12 steps. I’ve been off fentanyl for 6 years now.
2. What’s something that a lot of people misunderstand or “get wrong” about addiction or people who use drugs?
It’s not a “choice”. I tried to quit drugs for 10 years, I hated the lifestyle and tried everything to stop.
3. What has it been like getting treatment? What has it meant to you?
Methadone and Suboxone have saved my life. I would probably be dead without it. Going to treatment also saved my life, but the 12-steps have been my ultimate salvation.
4. What have you learned about yourself along your recovery journey?
Everything.
5. What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?
I have a loving family and good upbringing, yet all my siblings and I experienced addiction. It does not discriminate.
6. If you could share one message to people who may be struggling with substance use, what would it be?
It takes a lot of strength to ask for help and get honest, but it is so worth it. Recovery is possible, but we can not recovery alone.
Thank you, Anna, for sharing your experience in recovery. Happy Recovery Month!
