#MyRecovery – Anonymous Story
#MyRecovery – Anonymous Story
During Recovery Month, we’ve asked people in recovery to share their stories about what led them to recovery and their experience with treatment, so that others can feel empowered to open up and seek help, too. This story was submitted anonymously. #MyRecovery
1. How did your experience with opioids start, and when did you know you needed help?
It started when I had a foot operation. My doctor prescribed me perks for my everyday use for pain of my foot When my foot was healed he cut me off my perks and two days later I felt so shitty.
2. What’s something that a lot of people misunderstand or “get wrong” about addiction or people who use drugs?
People look at you funny like you’re gonna ask them for something, or you’re gonna take something from them, or you’re probably homeless.
3. What has it been like getting treatment? What has it meant to you?
Treatment helped a lot. Don’t have to worry about not feeling shitty all day and it helps you get on with the day.
4. What have you learned about yourself along your recovery journey?
That it don’t take much to ruin your life over something that was supposed to help you. Don’t take advantage of what you do and think about the after effects of it.
5. What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?
That I can still function with my life after drugs take a hold of it. Untie your problems to a better fit.
6. If you could share one message to people who may be struggling with substance use, what would it be?
Hang in there. You will get use of what you’re doing and always think of the after effects of it when you do it.
Thank you for sharing your experience in recovery. Happy Recovery Month!
