#MyRecovery – Nathalie’s Story
During Recovery Month, we’ve asked people in recovery to share their stories about what led them to recovery and their experience with treatment, so that others can feel empowered to open up and seek help, too. This is Nathalie’s story. #MyRecovery
1. How did your experience with opioids start, and when did you know you needed help?
At 22 I was prescribed them for Crohn’s disease. It became a problem when I was no longer getting them from a d doctor and started spending a lot of money to get them on the street and increasing my tolerance.
2. What’s something that a lot of people misunderstand or “get wrong” about addiction or people who use drugs?
They think only street/homeless or low income people are the only kind that use drugs but i’ve seen people from all backgrounds and lifestyles go down the path of addiction.
3. What has it been like getting treatment? What has it meant to you?
Every part of my life has improved! My kids are happier, Im saving money, and I’m happier!
4. What have you learned about yourself along your recovery journey?
I am stronger than I thought 🙂
5. What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?
Tried all the different treatment methods before and methadone is what stuck.
6. If you could share one message to people who may be struggling with substance use, what would it be?
KEEP TRYING!!! It might take 1 month or 1 year or 10 years but you can do it!
Thank you, Nathalie, for sharing your experience in recovery. Happy Recovery Month!
