#MyRecovery – Andrew’s Story

Happy Recovery Month

During Recovery Month, we’ve asked people in recovery to share their stories about what led them to recovery and their experience with treatment, so that others can feel empowered to open up and seek help, too. This is Andrew’s story. #MyRecovery

Andrew MyRecovery

1. How did your experience with opioids start, and when did you know you needed help?

I got hurt and got a prescription, forgot if I took a dose and double-dosed accidentally. I got high for the first time which alleviated mental health issues, so I kept doing it.

2. What’s something that a lot of people misunderstand or “get wrong” about addiction or people who use drugs?

Drugs can be used a solution for pain, which can be mental and/or physical.

3. What has it been like getting treatment? What has it meant to you?

Treatment is difficult and a struggle for the truth. The cost of living is much higher now and on the street it’s worse – mostly shopping at convenience stores where price is inflated.

Timing of life and treatment doesn’t always align – it’s hard to maintain when the rest of life is difficult and one thing can trigger a relapse.

4. What have you learned about yourself along your recovery journey?

More maturity. I’m not the only person in the world – getting over selfishness. Talk to avoid violence.

5. What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?

I’m actually a good person and my street persona is not who I am.

6. If you could share one message to people who may be struggling with substance use, what would it be?

Drugs are rarely the problem, the problem is pain and being around the wrong people.

Thank you, Andrew, for sharing your experience in recovery. Happy Recovery Month!
