PAM 2024 Interview with Laura Knapp

During Pharmacy Appreciation Month, we spoke with Laura Knapp, Pharmacy Assistant at CATP Oshawa, to hear her perspective on how CATC’s integrated pharmacy services help support our patients on their recovery journey.

1. What motivated you to work in specialized pharmacy services for addiction treatment?

I have a background in Sociology and have always had a strong interest in helping people. Addiction has always been a field of interest for me as it is something that has affected family members of mine, and affects so many families and individuals in our community. Seeing first hand the success of so many of our patients through our specialized pharmacy services is really validating and proves the importance of clinics/pharmacies like ours.

2. What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my job would absolutely be our patients. Although our patients often times have to deal with a lot stigma surrounding opiate use disorder, they are some of the kindest and most appreciative people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Seeing our patients regularly whether it be daily or weekly allows us to develop strong connections with them, which helps us to provide them the best possible care we can. I also have the pleasure of working alongside some amazing colleagues who also share the same understanding and passion for our work.

3. Why are integrated pharmacy services so important for patients with opioid use disorder?

I believe our integrated pharmacy services are so important because they offer a much more convenient and reliable way for patients to receive care. Starting on the program can seem like an intimidating commitment, but due to our strong communication with our clinic/doctors and streamlined processes, we offer quick and effective services, making it much more accessible for patients who come into the pharmacy on a regular basis.

4. What makes our patients unique, and how do you meet their needs in your daily work?

Our patients and program are unique because of the relationships that are developed with our care team. As we have the pleasure of getting to know our patients very well, we’re able to go above and beyond for them servicing their unique individual needs. For example, if we know a patient is dealing with a lot of external stressors we’re going to extend as much help and patience to them as we possibly can.

5. If you had one message for people considering starting treatment for opioid use disorder, what would it be?

I would say not to be overwhelmed by the process and to be patient with yourself. Our clinics are very welcoming, inclusive and free of all judgement. Whether you commit right away, or it takes a few tries, we’re always here to lend a helping hand.

Thank you, Laura, for sharing with us your passion for patient care, and words of encouragement for those struggling with opioid use disorder.

We hope you have a fantastic Pharmacy Appreciation Month!
