Pharmacy Appreciation Month: The Power of Pharmacy in integrated opioid addiction treatment

Pharmacy Appreciation Month

March is Pharmacy Appreciation Month: a time to celebrate our hardworking and dedicated pharmacy teams who are everyday champions in our patients’ recovery.

This year’s theme, “Experience the Power of Pharmacy,” is about empowering pharmacy professionals to practice to the fullest extent of their capability in providing exceptional and accessible care. As part of our integrated clinic care model, our pharmacy teams work hand in hand with nurses, doctors and support staff to deliver the best possible evidence-based care to nearly 19,000 patients in Ontario and New Brunswick. As a result of this seamless collaboration, patients are 4 times more likely to stay in treatment for their opioid use disorder treatment! We’re incredibly proud of our pharmacy teams for the amazing impact they’re having on the communities we serve.

To all pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and assistants: thank you for all that you do!

What’s new in pharmacy?

Over the past year, exciting developments have taken place in the pharmacy landscape. Pharmacists in BC and Ontario can now prescribe for common minor ailments, making it easier and faster for people to get the help they need for smaller and simpler issues.

In Ontario, patients at any of our more than 70 clinics can now get treatment for COVID infection with Paxlovid, vaccinations for influenza and COVID, as well as prescriptions for the following (and more) common conditions through our pharmacy teams:

  • Yeast Infections
  • Allergies
  • Menstrual Cramps
  • Pink Eye
  • Insect bites, Tick Bites & hives
  • Cold Sores
  • Muscle Sprains
  • Heart Burn
  • Nausea/Vomiting of Pregnancy
  • UTI’s
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Oral Thrush
  • Skin Rash

Community pharmacies are some of the most accessible places to find expert medical help. Thanks to these improved prescribing regulations, patients not only have less barriers to care, they now have more opportunities to build and deepen trusted relationships with their pharmacists.

Throughout Pharmacy Appreciation Month we’ll be sharing interviews with our pharmacy teams, to hear more about how our integrated clinic care model helps unlock the full power of pharmacy. Make sure to check back in throughout the month!
